After a burger tasting planned for a well-known burger haunt fell through, I walked aimlessly and annoyed that my burger craving was postponed and prolonged -”What else is in this area” ? I asked myself ”Minetta Tavern”, “Five Guys” ? Not willing to deal with the waiting and unsure chance of getting a table at Minetta, or needlessly following the hordes of burger reviewers that flock after Five Guys, I was lost for ideas. Reluctantly I decided to expel my idea of a burger mission, and just go to a normal brunch, perhaps giving my arteries a rest -and maybe order a salad? I noticed that there were swarms of people outside Jane, an American bistro and sister restaurant of  The Smith,  a partnership of Glen Harris and Jeffrey Lefcourt. I asked myself- “Could this have a decent burger”?  I quickly scanned the crowded room hoping to catch a glimpse of other burger fanatics nourishing themselves on my unsuspecting prey. I noticed a guy, about to devour this surprisingly gorgeous specimen, and I was sold. I approached the maitre’d and asked for her next available table, then lounged on the front bench basking in the welcomed sunlight that was beating down on the city. The menu at Jane consists of your usual brunch/lunch favorites: Caesar Salad, Eggs Benedict, BLT and Vanilla Bean French Toast, the latter of which is supposedly their signature. The decor is modern contemporary with wide panoramic windows and comfortable banquette’s along each wall, the scene is a retrospect of Soho-fashionistas meets NYC students, with some restaurant savvy tourists thrown in for good measure.

My party and I were seated in the back of the packed dining room. Excitement suddenly came over me that I had found a great new burger place, my hopes of being the first to discover this new burger find, were dashed when I noticed on my handy Google App , that every man and his dog had reviewed the place!  Happily there weren’t too many distasteful slurs, so I felt confident that we were in for an unexpected treat. The burger was slated on the menu simply as “Jane Burger” with white cheddar, double smoke bacon, special sauce and fries. After careful interrogation of the waitress, I found out that there was a creamy mayonnaise based jalapeno marmalade and tangy green pickled tomatoes hidden in there also. The burger arrived, and was gargantuan! Served on a fat brioche bun with crispy french fries and cheese oozing out the side-I was a happy camper. My first bite was powered by the smokiness of the bacon, and crispy dill flavor of the pickled tomato. This was a novel and inventive alternative, capturing the flavor of a tomato and a dill pickle together. The beef was 100% ground sirloin, that was dripping with juices which quickly ran down my hands and forearms, like a rapid river. This was good in a way, because it told me that the burger was juicy and full of flavor. However it also told me, that my last bite could likely be dry. The flavor and texture was above average and I enjoyed it immensely, savoring every bite, unfortunately the last few bites were definitely dry, and drained of  juices. This tiny detail may seem trivial, but previous giants of the burger world have been known to avoid this paltry dilemma.

Jane restaurant is the perfect place to enjoy good decent brunch fare, while shopping in Soho, or maybe before catching a frou-frou artistically saturated film at the Angelika ? On the weekend expect to wait 10-15 mins. for a table, but if it’s a nice day you can work on your tan, take your mind off the stresses of life, and gawk at the brunch searching masses walk by, undoubtedly on the hunt for something fabulous and ever so popular. Well next time you’re in Soho and on that same hunt, the DMANBURGER say’s “look no further than Jane”.

Around the corner from Freeman’s, the taxidermy laden, clandestine tavern that has been repeatedly reviewed by food paparazzi over the years lays the charming cafe/restaurant -The National. Opened by Jeremy Hogeland and partner Julie Dickstein 7 months ago, they have dodged the press radar relatively well, a tactic to achieve their excellence before the hordes of foodies sunk their teeth in, literally! I was interested to learn that the namesake was inspired by Hotel Nacional de Cuba, featured in Godfather II .It was the  real-life La Cosa Nostra meeting spot for charismatic hoods Meyer Lansky and Lucky Luciano, back in the 40′s, and also featured in Godfather II. Jeremy informed me that his personal vision was to practice their “schizophrenic like” menu, which was jointly created by him, Julie and Chef Zoe Feigenbaum, and incorporates endless international eats and inspirations. The decor is cafe style cozy, scattered flea market trinkets and adornments, mother of pearl shades, antique mirrors, with the Cubano style name sign splashed high above with floor to ceiling white surgically clean subway tiles that plaster the walls. Oh –by the way – if you are wondering where the tables that you are eating on are from- none other than Meyer Lansky’s old haunt- Lansky Lounge!

The National originally opened as a cafe, so hence I decided to sample the expert young barista’s handy work, that was hurriedly serving cap’s and latte’s to a fashion forward crowd at her tiny mini coffee bar. The coffee was insanely good, with just the right amount of foam to put a smile on my face on this gloomy afternoon. The space was tight, but I had adequate room at which to perform my burger surgery, seated in front of the door, I glance around at the crowed dining room filled with Euro hipsters and East Village type style mavens, undoubtedly stopping for some quick sustenance before browsing through over highly priced duds and haircuts and next doors Freeman’s Sporting ClubFrench Culinary Graduate, Chef Zoe Feigenbaum at the helm, and was busy creating in the kitchen, a selection of tasty brunch treats such as Shrimp and Grits, Lobster Roll, Jerk Pork, Fish Tacos and Banana French Toast.

Zoe’s contribution to my appetite today was The National burger, an 8 oz.  Pat La Frieda blend burger, served with colossal chunks of Smokey blue cheese, slabs of rosy red tomatoes on a toasted brioche. Jeremy Hogeland explained to me that their genius method of pan-frying the burger in a cast iron skillet, than broiling it under the Salamander, seals the juices and makes for a tenderer succulent patty. My plate arrived with a gorgeous looking specimen of burger handy work, winning top marks for looks alone. The chunks of blue cheese had a subtle coating of bronzing, just ever so slightly tanned. The brioche bun was delicately toasted with the right amount of give, when poked with my finger. The French fries were cut in exact symmetry and crispy to the taste, with a generous burst of herb after flavor. The patty itself was juicy, plump and charred to perfection, as I gorged into this delicious burger, I really tried hard to find something wrong with it, but I just couldn’t!! I thought it was pretty much as close to perfection as a bistro style burger gets, just as Lucky and Meyer were the mastermind’s of crime, The National was this day the mastermind of the burger.

.

I also tasted the Fish Tacos which were crispy fried little pieces of Cod, adorned with zesty pickled cabbage, Pico de Gallo and a homemade tortilla. I can tell you as a Taco fan, these babies rated high on my list for some of the best I have ever had!  The National is a charming place for a coffee, brunch or dinner, with an evening menu that some say surpasses its more famous neighbor. So if you’re growing old waiting in line for a Freeman’s table, stop that insanity and dine at The National!!

I battled through the New York snow for a special friend’s celebratory lunch at a beautiful little French Bistro, Chat Noir. The owner Suzanne Latapie greeted me with welcome smiles as I asked her about her restaurant history that included such fame as La Goulue and Orsay, followed by, and more importantly where she got her burger meat! She explained to me that her creation to the burger world was a careful combination of 80% Chuck and 20% ground short ribs. Hearing this I was immediately excited and my mouth was watering at the chance to try her signature burger called appropriately “the Black Cat Burger”.

Our party was seated along the wall in a comfortable cozy banquette, and I settle in with good friends and was engrossed in interestingly witty conversation as I waited patiently for my impending burger. A variety of orders swarmed the table, expertly executed by a talented kitchen team one of which was my good friend Mike Rendiero who had recently acquired his passion in the garde manger section of the kitchen. His first culinary gift to our table was a very tasty tuna tartar, followed by various orders of Chat Noir’s bistro style menu, including a Mac and cheese that I rate as nothing short of amazing!! With black truffles and creamy white cheddar cheese it left me wanting more as I rudely tasted more than my fill from a friend sitting next to me.

I was clearly starving and couldn’t wait for my burger to arrive, after a short while my wait was over; the Black Cat burger was served to me on a bed of crispy seasoned thinly cut French fries. My first bite was a most welcomed flavor of seasoned meat, which came with a freshness that went down easily, so easy in fact it was over before I had a chance to savor it. “The Black Cat Burger” however was served in one of those buns that kind of broke apart in a few bites, leaving me a partial bun to finish my last morsel. A minor food faux-pais in an overall wonderful dining experience.

I definitely recommend adding the chic Bistro Chat Noir with its friendly staff, vivacious owner and delicious food to your holiday list.

I was kind of hungry after work so I thought an impromptu burger tasting may be the ticket to a gloomy cold New York day. I stumbled upon this attractive little bar/bistro on 17th Street, it was full of glamorous looking types nestling in for a end of day beverage and bite to eat. I approached the staff and was immediately escorted through a bustling dining room to my table in the back, surrounded by a mix of tourists and locals I was certain that I liked the atmosphere of this urban hideaway pretty much immediately. A enthusiastic server from New Zealand suggested that I give the Rye House Burger a go ! I obliged and settled in for the short wait gazing around the room admiring all the happy and festive New Yorkers enjoying the holiday season. The owner Julio visited my table and offered a friendly greeting and begun to recollect the night he and his buddies came up with the idea for this charming American style bar, the decor consisted of large communal wooden tables and dark comfy leather booths, soft lighting and Pennsylvanian collectables. Whilst my burger arrived I was treated to some delicious mini-corn dogs that did not last long in front of me, served with a robust and spicy mustard these babies were rockin ! Before long my Rye House burger had arrived, delivered with a generous portion of crispy hand cut French fries my burger was fixed with fresh green lettuce, rose red tomatoes and irresistibly rich gruyere cheese. I took my first bite and was pleasantly excited by the roasted charcoal flavor mixing with the velutinous texture of the gruyere, however much to my disappointment the foundation of the burger, the bun was coarse and flaky. After a few bites the bun disintegrated in my hand and I was left with the meat patty itself, now I know things can happen in restaurants….like maybe there was no bun deliveries that day, so it wouldn’t sway me from returning to the Rye House. I was impressed with a very inventive menu with delectable items such as a Beef Wellington Sandwich , ( their signature I’m told) Crayfish Po’ Boy, Empanada’s, Sloppy Joe sliders and an extensive beer, whiskey and wine list.
All in all I think it was a real find and definitely worth a visit, just check on those buns guys !!

On one of the worst weather days, I fought the Christmas revelers on 5th Avenue to finish some last minute Christmas shopping before honoring my appointment with the Schnipper’s Quality Kitchen. Owners Jonathan and Andrew Schnipper, had come to culinary fame by starting the popular Hale and Hearty Soup chain before trying their expertise at the burgers, their result was Schnipper’s Quality Kitchen. Now someone told me once there are three things to keep in mind when opening a restaurant, location location location, and they found it. Located at the foot of one of the busiest newspapers headquarters, this stark and spacious surgically clean burger joint has been on my list for some time, finally I was here!

After speaking with Jonathan, I was advised to try the Hickory Bacon Blue Burger, quite a mouth full huh? I wandered around the restaurant and could see the excitement in people eyes as they gorged themselves on many other Schnipper’s favorites such as, fish tacos, Mac and cheese, sweet potato fries and Sloppy Joes. For me however it was going to be Jonathan’s recommendation of crispy onions, smoky hickory BBQ sauce, blue cheese and bacon.

My burger arrived at the friendly and capable hands of the manager Joe, I attacked the body of the burger with a barrage of violent chomps, behaving like it was last meal and getting worrisome and horrifying glances from the table next to me. The flavor burst from the charcoal of the meat and the smokiness of the BBQ sauce almost brought me to tears it was so good, I stopped and thought to myself ” this is how a burger should be”. The French fries were equally tantalizing with a crispy sharp flavor that always is the perfect burger best friend.

Just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, my friends at Schnipper’s urged upon me another specialty of theirs, the Green Chile Cheeseburger. When I tasted this spicy morsel I was pleasantly aroused by the roasted pepper flavor of the poblano Chile and the creamy blend of cheese that covered the meat patty, a different flavor but one I will gladly repeat.

So for many mere burger mortals that would have been enough, but for me I felt I would be cheating myself terribly if I didn’t try just one more of the Schnipper’s meaty treats. I sheepishly took myself back to the cashier and asked for a regular cheeseburger with crispy onions, lettuce, tomato, cheddar cheese and the mysteriously good Schnipper’s sauce. When asked what was in the contents of this fine condiment I was given a rightfully vague answer, after all you don’t want that secret getting out!

The cheeseburger went down with no problem at all, leaving behind in my taste buds a feeling of freshness and flavor that I feel won’t be rivaled for some time. In case you hadn’t guessed by reading this Schnipper’s was, well in a word AWESOME!! Just to re-cap the Hickory Blue Bacon Burger A+++, the Green Chile Cheeseburger A++, and the Cheeseburger with crispy onions and Schnipper’s Sauce…. PRICELESS!

I want to thank Jonathan and Andrew Schnipper, Manager Joe Richardson and all the friendly staff for making this a memorable burger moment.

I’ll definately will be back !

If any self respecting southerner tells you about burgers, you should listen ! My Thanksgiving travels have brought me to Burlington NC, otherwise known sarcastically by locals as Burl-Vegas, burger fans here flock to Skid’s daily for their traditional southern style burger, “mustard-chili-slaw” on a soft un-toasted sesame seed bun.
This family owned burger haven has been slinging the southern burger trilogy since 1949, with a variety of burgers to choose from I was advised by our experienced burger waitress of 30 years, Bonnie to give the Original Skid’s Special a try.

While sitting in tiny, but comfortable 50’s style booths I was granted a rare insider’s tour of this quaint little restaurant, I gazed impatiently as Lucy, the owner tended to my meaty delights, sizzling in ample grease on a flat style griddle that had looked like it had seen a few burgers in it’s time. I headed back to my booth and anxiously awaited the arrival of Lucy’s creation, and sipped happily on my old style Diet Coke with hand crushed ice.

Finally the burger appeared on my table, delivered with infinite personality and poise by Bonnie, without hesitation I gouged my mouth into this succulent creation and was immediately surprised by the texture and flavor of the burger, it was rather moist and exuded a powerful flavor of sweetness and savory due to the chili, and a freshness and crunchiness due to the coleslaw, although the burger after a while became soggy I enjoyed it as I inhaled it quicker than most of my previously rated burgers.

The Mustard-chili-slaw Original Skid’s burger was definitely worth a try and rates up there as a unique and joyous experience during my Thanksgiving holiday, the folks at Skid’s are a wonderful crew of southern food aficionados and I enjoyed patronizing their quaint little piece of burger history.

Thanks Skid’s !!!

After 17 years of living in this Gotham of delectable delights, I had suddenly realized that I had never patronized the iconic historical watering hole of Pete’s Tavern. As soon as I entered Pete’s I was welcomed into a environment and a mood that felt like home, including a bar teaming with good looking stylish after-work punters and charmingly sarcastic wait staff.
My party was seated in the rear of the restaurant and I quickly nestled in for an evening of good old American pub fare. My wavering decision of whether to go with the Kobe beef burger or the regular burger was quickly chosen for me by an impromptu vote at my table, which was in favor of ” classic Pete’s burger”.
After a short while my burger arrived perched on a bed of crispy French fries and oozing delicious cheddar cheese, my first bite was an explosion of charcoal and woody BBQ flavors that permeated through a juicy, yet firm meat patty. The bun was a soft and toasty sesame seed which melted in my mouth with every bite, the French fries were crispy and shoestring with every last one of them succumbing to my ferocious appetite. As I gazed at the various famous faces of past customers pictured on the walls overhead of me, I felt transfixed into a part of history and nostalgia that completed my New York Tavern experience.
With an A+ for atmosphere and an A- for cuisine, Pete’s Tavern should be on everyone’s list as a staple neighborhood burger hangout spot.

A wonderful fall day in New York decided to venture to the other side, the other side of the Brooklyn Bridge that is. I heard that 5 Front restaurant had a decent burger, turns out there were right !! After schelpping over one of the grandeurs of architecture separating Manhattan from Brooklyn, I sat down in ample sized bamboo garden behind an historic house directly under the bridge, my waiter was a young dude with a great knowledge of the menu. Although his knowledge today would be unnecessary because I was here for a BURGER !!

After sometime coming it was worth the wait the patty was a big fat juicy piece of happiness that melted in my mouth the instant that it was shoved into it, the fries were crispy and well done, exactly how a fry should be …nothing much more to say.

Thumbs up 5 Front !!

Norma’s at Le Parker Meridien: Applewood smoked bacon burger…at $22.00 kind of pricey for a burger !! the smokey flavor of the bacon and the firm, yet softness of the bun was at first worth the $22.00, but then as I continued eating, I thought about so many other burgers in this great city of New York that were at the very least comparable, but not so heavy on the pocket !! definately food for thought !!
